Definition of Backbiting
Backbiting is to talk against someone who is not there, to slander someone in his absence, to say something that a person would not like when he was not there, to gossip about someone behind his back.
In Judaism, Backbiting is known as Lashon HaRa (the evil tongue).It is considered as a sin.
In Buddism, Backbiting goes against the ideal of right speech.
Backbiting is not only by talking but also giving signs.The signs are waving hand, curling your mouth, blinking your eyes and any facial expression etc.
The mother of believers Aisha' s following words :
" A woman came to our house.After she left, I made a sign with my hand in order to point at her shortness ".Upon this the Prophet ( PBUH ) told me : " you backbited about that woman ".Whoever listens to backbiting is like the one who backbites.Whoever listens to backbiting is one of backbiters.
Backbiting is haram.Islam considers it to be a major sin.People should be careful of their tongue because tongue will hurt someone.It makes them unhappy if they hear.
Backbiting can occur in many different ways :
Someone asked our beloved Proppet ( PBUH ) " Oh the Prophet of Allah ( PBUH ), what is ghaybah?" He answered : " to mention your brother in a way that he would not like." ( Ebu Devud, Tirmizi ).
To talk about brother/sister infront of others in a way he/ she would not like if he/she heard eventhough the things about brothers or sisters are true.But if you say is true , you will just be backbiting and if you say is untrue , you will not just be backbiting also be slandering.
Backbiting may occur as a form of release after a confrontation.The program television talks the lives of celebrities, elite members and certain communities.Gossip is common in human society as people seek to divert blame and establish their place in the dominance hierrarchy.

- Talking about physical flaws such as he is blind, short, deaf, dumb and tall etc.
- Saying about the moral flaws such as she is disobedient, he is impolite, weak, his brother has bad manner etc.
- Mentioning the background flaws such as he is a gardener, barber, security guard, she is a maid, baby sitter etc.
- Mentioning about the religious affairs flaws such as he is sinner, he cannot recite al- qur'an etc.
