Basil (Ocimum basilicum) contains carbohydrate, protein, dietary fiber, choline, lutein, cryptoxanthin, zea-xanthin, flavonoids, anthoxyanins, beta-carotene, (E)-beta-caryophyllene, vitamin A, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B6, vitamin B9 (folate), vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, magnesium, iron, manganese, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and zinc.It is very low in calorie.Basil does not have cholesterol.

Basil has many polyphenolic flavonoids such as orientin and vicenin to act as antioxidant.Basil leaf is composed of the essential oil like eugenol, citronellol, linalool, citral, limonene, and terpineol to act as anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.It can be detoxifier.Basil has anti-fertility effect on both men and women.They should not consume basil excessively.Women in pregnancy are not recommended to consume it.

The word Basil derives from the Greek word "basileus," which means king.It grows best under warm and tropical climate.The leaves and seeds of basil can be used for medicinal need.
