Nutmeg is the seed of the tree, roughly egg-shaped.Mace is the dried lacy reddish covering or aril of the seed.Nutmeg and mace have semilar sensory qualities, with nutmeg having a slightly sweeter and mace a more delicate flavour.Nutmeg is usually used in powdered form.

Nutmeg contains myristicin, amonoamine oxidase inhibitor, and psychoactive substance.The essential oil obtained by steam distillation of ground nutmeg is used in perfumery and pharmaceutical industries.The oil is colourless or light yellow, and smells and tastes of nutmeg.In traditional medicine nutmeg and nutmeg oil were used for disorders related to the nervous and digestive system.

The Effects of Nutmeg and Mace

The consumption of excessive amount of nutmeg can result in myristicin poisoning.Myristicin poisoning can induce convulsions, palpitations, nausea, dehydration, and body pain.

Intoxications with nutmeg had effects that varied from person to person such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, drymouth, bloodshot eyes, and memory disturbances.It can induce hallucinogenic effects including visual distortions and paranoid ideation.Intoxication took several hours before the maximum effect was reached.Effecs and after effects lasted up to several days.

Women in pregnancy are not recommended to consume nutmeg and mace in large doses that may cause miscarriages or birth defects.

Nutmeg can be toxic by using in large doses or 30 grams ( six tablespoons) a day.But this effect will not be produced even with generous amount in culinary usage.
