Shiitake mushroom is grown by two methods
- On all-natural Hardwood logs.
The highest quality of shiitake mushroom is grown on logs of natural oak or a similar hardwood.The grower drill holes inoculate logs with spawn and seal the holes with hot wax or plastic plugs. It needs sunlight, day and night cycles, and ventilation, so logs are kept under shade trees or in greenhouse with shade cloth.Some are grown inside under controlled condition.
- On Sawdust blocks.
It is called substrata or artificial logs are made of sawdust and cooked grains that are sterilized with pressurized stem.They are inoculated with spawn, incubated for 1-4 montha and then soaked in water to stimulate the fruiting process.The mushroom is grown indoor with controlled humidity, temperature, electrict light and air flow.
